BGA-sponsored Meetings
The BGA aims to organise three meetings a year, and in addition invites members to organise meetings on geophysics-relevant subjects (see Organising a Meeting ). The three meetings are:
- Bullerwell Lecture To be given each year by an outstanding young British geophysicist. List of past Bullerwell lecturers
- Bullerwell Lecturer 2012 Nomination Form (MS Word format) and instructions (pdf)
- New Advances in Geophysics A two-day meeting to be organised each year as the Royal Astronomical Society's February "G" meeting, the theme to be a "hot topic" of geophysics, chosen each year.
- Postgraduate Research in Progress in Geophysics A one- or two-day meeting to be held at a university with an active postgraduate geophysics programme, in September or October of each year.
Planned meetings:
"Remote Sensing of Volcanoes and Volcanic Processes, integrating observation and modelling", Geological Society William Smith Meeting
The BGA is co-sponsoring this year's William Smith meeting, which is on 4-5 October in the Geological Society, Burlington House. See Geological Society website.
"UKSEDI - Study of the Earth's deep interior", 11th November 2011
This RAS Discussion Meeting is convened by Richard Holme, Kathy Whaler and James Wookey and takes place at Burlington House from 10.30 to 15.30 - see http://www.ras.org.uk for details.

2012 New Advances in Geophysics meeting and BGA AGM
The Geophysics of the cryosphere and glacial products: properties, processes, and technical advances
These will be held on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th February 2012 at Burlington House. The BGA AGM will take place on Friday 10th during the lunch break.
Call for papers:
Applied geophysics, together with more fundamental theoretical and forward and inverse modelling advances , has played a major role in the exploration of the world's ice masses and their geological settings and sedimentological legacies for more than half a century. Geophysical techniques have also proven to be highly suited for the characterisation of the properties of and processes within permafrost and seasonally frozen ground, as well as those within snow and other frozen materials. Geophysical exploration, often qualitatively or quantitatively integrated with other geoscientific methods and findings, has thus resulted in many exciting discoveries and case studies.
We cordially invite contributions from all areas of geophysics and associated disciplines as applied or relevant to present-day ice masses, ice cores, frozen ground or snow. Likewise, we are keen to receive contributions on the application of geophysical and associated techniques to glacial materials and products to reconstruct past ice masses, dynamics, and hydrology.
We are excited to have Prof. David Vaughan (British Antarctic Survey, UK), Prof. Robin Bell (Lamond-Doherty Earth Observatory, USA) and Prof. Christian Hauck (University of Fribourg, Switzerland) as our keynote speakers at the event.

Deadline for abstracts is 16th December 2011; registration deadline for cheaper rate is 13th January 2012.
Organisers: Bernd Kulessa, Tavi Murray (Swansea), Edward C. King, Andy Smith (BAS)

"Dynamic Topography - a key surface record of deep Earth processes", 1-2 September 2011
Geological Society Lecture Theatre, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BG
Meeting arranged by the Geological Society, British Geophysical Association and Royal Astronomical Society, and bringing together geologists, geomorphologists and geophysicists seeking to understand how processes operating within the mantle interact with those acting on the surface to shape the Earth’s topography and control sediment and geochemical flux.

2011 Bullerwell Lecturer - Adrian Muxworthy
The 2011 Bullerwell Lecture was given by Dr Adrian R. Muxworthy (Imperial College, London), at the European Geosciences Union Annual Assembly in Vienna, and will be given again at the 2011 Postgraduate Meeting in Oxford.
2011 New Advances in Geophysics annual meeting
Thursday 10th and Friday 11th February 2011, Burlington House (Geological Society Lecture Theatre and Lower Library). Title: "Controlling Factors of Subduction Zone Earthquakes". Details are on the website http://www.southampton.ac.uk/~nag2011/.
Recent major earthquakes such as the series offshore Sumatra (2004-2007) and Chile (2010) show the importance of understanding the dynamic processes of subduction zone earthquakes and the structural and tectonic context within which they occur. Recent research across the spectrum of geophysics and geology at a number of active margins is producing progress towards understanding some of the key earth science and societal issues. Methods include observations from active source and earthquake seismology, geodesy from modern and geological records, drilling for sampling, logging and in situ measurements, monitoring, experimental work and analogue and numerical modelling. Key questions include: What controls the extent of the seismogenic zone across the subduction zone (up and down the subducting slab)? How does fault slip during large earthquakes relate to interseismic deformation and seismicity? What factors can control the segmentation of the main subduction fault, and hence the along-strike propagation of rupture? How do these factors control hazard from the earthquake itself and from tsunamigenesis?
Keynote speakers included:
Nathan Bangs Heidrun Kopp Kerry Sieh Mark Simons
Kelin Wang
2010 Postgraduate Research in Progress meeting
16-17 September 2010 This year's meeting took place at Bristol University. Prizes were awarded for the best talk and best poster. Website for Postgraduate Meeting.
Magma Emplacement and Storage in the Earth's Crust
11/12 February 2010, The Geology Society, Burlington House, London. Organisers:Tim Wright (Leeds), John Blundy (Bristol), Bob White (Cambridge), Joe Cann (Leeds emeritus)
Magma plays a critical role in governing the mechanics of seafloor spreading, continental rifting, and in the formation of continental crust at subduction zones. Yet, until recently, few direct observations had been made of magma emplacement and storage. This meeting will discuss new inter-disciplinary observations and models of magma emplacement and storage, and the implications for volcanism.
