'RAS Fellowships' are offered annually in addition to the ‘Sir Norman Lockyer Fellowship’ ( which is awarded every 3 years). What follows applies to the 'RAS Fellowships' only.
Their purpose is to enable outstanding candidates to pursue research in the UK in the disciplines that the RAS advances (astronomy, solar-system science, geophysics and closely related branches of these sciences). A call for applications will be made annually from candidates, of any nationality, holding a doctorate (or equivalent) from a recognized institution of higher education awarded no more than FIVE years before the proposed start date of the Fellowship, and who are ordinarily resident (that is, who normally live and work) in the UK. In addition, for future awards, only ONE RAS Fellowship may be held in the same university (as listed by UCAS) at any one time (see below for details of current Fellows).
The Fellowships, awarded for upto a period of three years, will be in the form of a grant to the university at which the fellow is based and will be calculated from the Grade 7 range of the Single Pay Spine of the UK’s HE Framework Agreement, taking into account age and incorporating annual increments. A further £2,000 per annum may be claimed for costs incurred in attending meetings and conferences or for other items related to the research. In addition, the RAS will meet the cost of Employers National Insurance contributions and make an additional payment, where appropriate, to a Fellow’s personal pension plan. The RAS will fund only directly incurred costs, and not overheads (including bench fees or ‘Full Economic Costing’). Applications will need to be certified by an authorised person at the institution at which the fellowship will be held confirming acceptance of this condition
The next call for applications will be September 2012 for fellowships tenable from October 2013

Other details about the Fellowships:
Award date of PhD
In calculating the '5 years' rule candidates who have taken the ‘viva’ examination by the application deadline and expect to be awarded a PhD degree by the Fellowship start date will be eligible.
Teaching and other commitments
Fellows may take up an average of 6 hours paid teaching or demonstrating per week, without deduction from the value of the award, provided that the duties do not hinder their research. No other type of paid work should be undertaken during the term of the Fellowship without prior approval of the RAS.
Holidays
Reasonable holidays, not exceeding eight weeks per year, including public holidays, may be taken at the discretion of the Fellow's Head of Department.
Sick Leave
If a Fellow is absent through illness for more than two weeks, the RAS must be informed immediately and a medical certificate forwarded. Return from such absences must also be reported. During absence covered by a medical certificate, Fellows will be paid at the full rate for the first four weeks and at half rate for the next four weeks within any twelve-month period from the first day of absence. The Fellowship may be held in abeyance for longer sick absences. The RAS does not accept any liability for illness, injury or accident during the period of a Fellow's award. Fellows are not employees of the RAS. The RAS has no employer's liability for medical insurance cover. Fellows must advise the RAS of any absence from their institution other than for conferences, fieldwork or permitted holidays.
Reports
Fellows are expected to publish original research results, normally in the journals of the RAS. Any publications arising from the Fellowships must acknowledge the RAS. A detailed interim report (1500-2000 words in length) must be submitted at the end of the first year of the Fellowships. This should provide a factual summary of the work carried out to date, including results, and should outline research planned for the remainder of the award. A short final report, including a list of any publications and manuscripts in press or under review, should be submitted no later than 3 months after the termination of the award.
Termination of Award
A Fellowship may be terminated where the progress or conduct of the Fellow is judged to be unsatisfactory by the Council of the RAS. If a Fellow discontinues his/her research or takes up other employment before the end of the award, the RAS must be informed immediately.
Extension
There will be no extensions to the Fellowships
