The RAS invites suggestions from Fellows of the RAS who wish to propose (and therefore organise) Specialist Discussion Meetings for the academic year beginning October 2013.
The RAS lecture theatreSpecialist Discussion (SD) Meetings are usually held on the second Friday of every month from October to March. The usual format is to hold two parallel SD Meetings, one on a topic in Astronomy and one in Geophysics, from 10:30 to 15:30. These are followed by a joint Ordinary (A&G) Meeting at 16:00, but other formats can be accommodated. The meetings are held at Burlington House, London, one at the RAS and one at the neighbouring Geological Society. These meetings are free to RAS Fellows, with a small charge for non-Fellows. Meetings may be held jointly with other interested bodies, e.g. other societies.
The minimum requirements for a meeting proposal are:
- The names of two (or more) organisers. At least one organiser should be a Fellow of the Society, who would normally submit the proposal.
- A short title.
- A brief (2-3 sentence) abstract.
A separate longer abstract (up to one page in length) may additionally be submitted.
For SD Meetings, the RAS will normally pay expenses for one or two speakers outside the UK, based on economy travel. The RAS also provides the meeting venues and advertising free of charge. The main job of the organisers is to recruit a good set of speakers in the field, and to chair the meeting.
Interested parties should see our detailed guidance on how to propose an SD Meeting, and notes on the role of a meeting organiser.
Proposals for SD Meetings should be sent to the relevant RAS Secretary:
The extended deadline for the receipt of proposals is 30 April 2013 (the original deadline was 1 April).
