General Information The Department runs a one-year taught MSc course in Petroleum Geoscience, with a major option in Geophysics, which is intended as vocational training for a career in petroleum exploration. The main areas of current research are:
- Exploration seismology, with particular emphasis on borehole exploration methods, tomographic imaging, seismic lithology and 3D/4D imaging.
- Crustal seismology, wide-angle and reflection imaging, seismic inversion.
- Numerical simulation of geological processes, including landscape evolution, magma generation and hydrocarbon generation.
- Impact processes, crater formation, planetary processes.
The Group is equipped with state of the art computer systems consisting of a cluster of SUN and DEC Alpha workstations, and an extensive selection of peripheral devices. A wide range of seismic software is installed, including 3D ProMax, Sierra and Landmark Seisworks. 3D visualisation in a fully immersive environment has recently been installed.
