harmonia-macrocosmia
A plate from Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmia. (RAS Library)

Andreas Cellarius’s Harmonia Macrocosmica book of 1708 includes general maps of the constellations, this plate showing the southern skies. It also, unusually, includes a presentation of the redrawing of all the constellations as Christian saints and other images, as set out by Julius Schiller in his Coelum Stellatum Christianum of 1627.

This book is held in the RAS Library. Many of the items in the Society's collection have been photographed to make them available to Fellows and the public. Some images, such as this one, are available online through the Science Photo Library. Others are held as prints or transparencies in the Library. More information about the RAS Library and archives.

How to view RAS images

Clients wishing to use RAS images for commercial publication, broadcasting or filming should first contact the Science Photo Library. SPL offers all images at low resolution, with a search facility.

Researchers requiring images for non-profit and academic use, or offering suggestions for images to be included, should contact the Librarian direct for a preliminary discussion of what they require.

The Librarian is also happy to advise as far as possible on selection of images for commercial use which may be obtained through SPL, or users may visit the Library by appointment to browse the physical files of images.
