Icy collisions: the art of planet building beyond the snow line

Talk at the Ordinary Meeting of the RAS held on 10 January 2014

by Dr Helen Fraser (Open University)

The process of planet formation requires collisions between small dust grains, which stick together to form larger objects such as comets and planets. Beyond the 'snow line' these will be coated in ices. Dr Fraser discusses how these icy grains stick together, and laboratory experiments to test the theory of how to build a planet.
