Invitation to apply for individual membership of the IAU.iau_ga2009.jpg


The IAU was founded in 1919 to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy in all its aspects through international cooperation. New members can be admitted to the IAU at the next General Assembly ( in August 2009) which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Suitably qualified individuals, who are British or who are in  long-term residence in the UK , are encouraged to  apply for nomination for IAU Individual Membership.

RAS PN 08/53: Space and astronomy a hit with pupils as 1000 schools get free telescopes
The RAS has teamed with STFC and the Society for Popular Astronomy in a scheme that will see 1 in 4 secondary schools get a free telescope.

IYA 2009

'As far back as I can recall I looked into the night sky with  awe and amazement at what was actually up there...( IYA) can show the general public of all ages and abilities ( its)  true beauty'.
Thus undergraduate  Ryan Laird who has been selected to represent UK students at the launch event of IYA (International Year of Astronomy) 2009 in Paris in January next year.
Around 400 participants are expected, among them eminent scientists (including Nobel Prize winners), and also about 200 young students from over 100 countries.
