International Astronomical Union (IAU) membership application forms will be available from September 2011.
Individual Membership:
If you are a professional, 'active' astronomer and your home or long-term residence is in the UK you are invited to apply for individual membership of the IAU.
Professional scientists whose research is directly relevant to some branch of astronomy are eligible for election as Individual Members. Individual Members are, normally, admitted by the IAU Executive Committee on the proposal of a National Member.Information on the qualification for membership and application procedure can be found here. A list of the IAU Individual Members per country is available as a Word document here.
The RAS, as the UK 'National Member' of the IAU , is responsible for vetting and forwarding nominations to the IAU in time for their consideration at the next General Assembly (GA), to be held in Bejing in August 2012. The membership fees of successful candidates will be met by the RAS.
If you wish to apply to become a member of the IAU, please contact Miss Fern Storey at

to request the link to the secure online form. Please note deadline for applications is 15th January 2012.
Note: Scientists wishing to attend the General Assembly require an invitation. This invitation is automatically extended to all current IAU members, and also, implicitly, to all candidates being proposed for IAU membership at the GA. In other cases would-be attendees normally resident in the UK should indicate this on the on-line form.
Membership of the RAS (though highly desirable!) is not a requirement for being a UK based individual member of the IAU. Please note that if your address does not identify you as a professional scientist in a relevant field you should provide a short statement of your status.
