 The refurbishment of the RAS in Burlington House has entered its final phase and staff will resume working there wef NOVEMBER 1st. Please note that services will be disrupted during the actual removal period (between 29-31 October).In due course there will be an on-line tour of the new facilities. This week in 1822 ( June 14 to be precise) Charles Babbage read a paper to the Royal Astronomical Society in which he proposed a "difference engine"  - a mechanical device to perform mathematical and astronomical calculations which is considered a technological precursor to the calculator and, ultimately, to the computer.
