Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell was one of 9 people, and the only foreigner, to receive an honorary doctorate from Harvard University on June 7.
Professor Bell Burnell, President of the RAS between 2002-2004, in accepting the award said, "I hope that my presence as a senior woman in science will encourage more women to consider a career in science."
With her , also receiving honorary doctorates, were the Chairman of Microsoft, Bill Gates; William 'Bill' Russell, the first black superstar of basketball and Lawrence Summers, Harvard’s president until 2006, and U.S. Treasury Secretary under President Clinton.
