Prof. Mestel was Emeritus Professor at the University of Sussex, and his research interests ranged from stellar structure and evolution to cosmic magnetism and pulsar electrodynamics. In 1963, he published a paper describing a phenomenon that occurs during galaxy and star formation that came to be known as a 'Mestel disk'.

For his scientific achievements, Prof. Mestel was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1977. He later received the Eddington Medal from the RAS in 1993, for his fundamental work on cosmic magnetism, and then the Society's highest honour, the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, in 2002.
