The RAS offers its condolences to the family and friends of Dr Helen Walker, who sadly passed away in September following a 5-month illness.

Dr Walker was a noted space scientist, a leading light in the UK IYA2009 celebrations, and an advocate for women in astronomy. Her research interests focused on planets, and the material around stars which might form planets. She was a very valued member of the RAS Fellowship and served in several roles for the Society, and was always completely dedicated to whatever role she undertook.

In recent years, Dr Walker was deeply involved in the testing and calibration of MIRI for JWST. She gave a profile of her work and career in an interview for the RAS in 2010.

Dr Walker's funeral is expected to be held on 9 October in Oxfordshire. Potential attendees are kindly asked to contact the Society for further details should they wish to attend.
