FROM IRAS TO HERSCHEL AND PLANCK: COSMOLOGY WITH INFRARED AND SUBMILLIMETRE SURVEYS - MEDIA INVITATION
GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY, BURLINGTON HOUSE, LONDON
MONDAY 9 JULY – WEDNESDAY 11 JULY 2007
Almost 150 astronomers will gather at a special conference to celebrate the 65th birthday of Professor Michael Rowan-Robinson, president of the Royal Astronomical Society and Professor of Astrophysics at Imperial College, London.
The meeting will focus on the advances in cosmology, the study of the origin, evolution and end of the Universe. In particular the scientists will present new discoveries made by orbiting observatories like the Spitzer Space Telescope and those anticipated from future missions.
The meeting will begin at 9.20 a.m. on Monday 9 July and continue until 4 p.m. on Wednesday 11 July.
Topics under discussion will include the formation of galaxies in the early Universe, the influence of dark matter and the large-scale structure of the cosmos. Delegates will also consider the scientific expected results from the European Space Agency’s Herschel and Planck missions, both due to launch in 2008.
Full details of the programme are available on the meeting website at: http://astro.ic.ac.uk/Research/herschel_conference/index.shtml
Media representatives are invited to attend free of charge. However, it would be helpful if media would register in advance their intention to attend by contacting Robert Massey (contact details above). Media may also attend the meeting by simply presenting their credentials at the registration desk.
Further releases (under embargo) will be issued during the meeting.
