Images of Comet Holmes by Brian May and John Randall.

Editorial Office Manager for Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (and talented astrophotographer) John Randall has assembled a composite of 4 images of Comet Holmes. The sequence runs from 1-10 November 2007 and shows how the material around the comet continues to expand following its eruption on 24 October.
For comparison, all the images are at the same scale. During the outburst Comet Holmes became 1 million times brighter than expected and the material surrounding the cometary nucleus (the coma) ballooned to around the size of the Sun.
