The Executive Secretary is the most senior full-time employee of the RAS, responsible for the management and development of the society. Their duties include implementing the decisions made by Council, representing the society to outside bodies and the government, and the day-to-day running of the society.

Pamela Mortimer obtained a degree in Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde and an MSc in Medical Microbiology from the University of Surrey. She has lectured at the Defence Academy, Shrivenham and at the Royal Army Medical College. During a 14 year career in the UK Civil Service Pamela has worked on fields as diverse as entomology, scientific risk, human genetics, defence strategy and international security policy. She has worked closely with military leaders, health ministers and senior officials across Whitehall.

Pamela will take up her post on 1 May, starting with a two week handover period with the existing Executive Secretary, David Elliott, who is due to retire on 11 May.
