Nominations are required for 3 new candidates to fill the posts of Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary of the UK Planetary Forum.

From the UKPF Committee:

Tom Stallard (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ), Vice-Chair and Secretary

For the past 4 years, since January 2002, it has been our pleasure to serve as the committee of the UK Planetary Forum (UKPF). The time has come for us to step down and allow a new team to run the Forum.

We herewith call for nominations of 3 new candidates to fill the posts of Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary.

Nominations must be emailed to us (addresses given below) by 12 Feb 2006. Each candidate must be a UKPF member and be nominated and seconded by a UKPF member (a member must be on the web member list, or on the UKPF email distribution list or have put themselves forward for membership before the above deadline).

The Planetary Forum's main role is to promote UK planetary work both amongst scientists and out towards the media and general public, thereby fostering greater collaboration between institutions working in planetary sciences and giving the community a representative body. As such, the Planetary Forum is a 'non-political' body, representing the opinions of all UK planetary scientists. The UKPF is also affiliated to the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS). The activities of the committee members are voluntary, and while a typical profile of tasks for Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary are attached at the end of this email, the new team may chose to distribute the tasks between posts as they prefer.

Each candidate should indicate the post they are standing for and provide a short biography, saying why they want to stand for that post and how they believe they could contribute. We particularly encourage applications from younger members of the community (i.e. postgrads and postdocs), who have traditionally run the UKPF and who will benefit from this invaluable experience. It is assumed that by standing for a UKPF post you have obtained relevant permissions from supervisors/line managers.

The following timetable is assumed for the committee changeover:

12 Feb 2006: Nominations deadline
13 Feb 2006: Candidate list emailed to UKPF
03 Mar 2006: Deadline for votes
06 Mar 2006: Results communicated to UKPF
Rest of March: Handover period
01 April 2006: New committee in place

The ideal candidates for each post should be enthusiastic and committed to UK planetary sciences, fulfilling the tasks described below as well as adding new ideas to support the Forum's main goals. Also, you should be quick in responding to emails from the community, many of which are urgent in nature. Some of the roles will be time-consuming at various periods, so be prepared for that. If you would like to stand but are unsure of the time commitments required, please don't hesistate to contact any of us.

Looking forward to your nominations,
The UKPF Committee
