Congratulations to Kevin Govender and the IAU!
The 2016 Edinburgh Medal has been awarded to Kevin Govender and the International Astronomical Union (IAU), for the establishment of the Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) and its work in building capacity in science in the developing world.
The Edinburgh Medal is given to men and women whose professional achievements are judged to have made a significant contribution to the understanding and well-being of humanity. The award recognises the contribution of Kevin and the OAD to the social development of those most in need, notably in sub-Sarahan Africa.
Professor Martin Barstow, President of the Royal Astronomical Society, said: "Astronomy is a discipline that inspires people around the world to pursue careers in science and engineering. Kevin has enabled communities to use this science to good effect, fostering the development of intellectual capital that will serve them well. My congratulations to him, the OAD and the IAU."
