The award recognises the contribution of Kevin and the OAD to the social development of those most in need, notably in sub-Sarahan Africa.

Professor Martin Barstow, President of the Royal Astronomical Society, said: "Astronomy is a discipline that inspires people around the world to pursue careers in science and engineering. Kevin has enabled communities to use this science to good effect, fostering the development of intellectual capital that will serve them well. My congratulations to him, the OAD and the IAU."
