 This week in 1822 ( June 14 to be precise) Charles Babbage read a paper to the Royal Astronomical Society in which he proposed a "difference engine" 
- a mechanical device to perform mathematical and astronomical calculations which is considered a technological precursor to the calculator and, ultimately, to the computer.
