RAS Associate and Gold Medal winner Rashid Alievich Sunyaev has been awarded the Crafoord Prize in recognition of his outstanding achievement in astrophysics.

Professor Sunyaev was elected as an Associate of the RAS in 1994 and awarded the RAS Gold Medal for astronomy in 1995. He divides his time between the Space Research Institute in Moscow and the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, Germany.

The Crafoord Prize honours his work on black holes and neutron stars and on the structure of the cosmic background radiation. This year the prize is shared with two other recipients, Edward Witten of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey and Maxim Kontsevich of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS) in France.
