The 2006 RAS National Astronomy Meeting (NAM) will be held at the University of Leicester. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. (BST) on Tuesday 4 April and continue until 3.30 p.m. (BST) on Friday 7 April.

Around 400 astronomers from the UK and overseas are expected to attend during the week. It will include 14 plenary talks and 24 parallel sessions featuring recent research on a wide range of astronomical topics.

Topics under discussion will include Solar System exploration, the structure of our Galaxy, gamma ray bursts, dark matter, gravitational waves, extrasolar planets and planet formation.

The NAM 2006 programme also features the RAS Darwin Lecture on the subject of “The Dark Side of the Universe,” presented by Joseph Silk, Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford University.
This will be followed by the annual presentation of the RAS medals, and a talk by Dr. Timothy Brown on the new Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope.

Another highlight of the week will be a public lecture on the topic of “Human Exploration of the Solar System,” presented by Professor Charles Cockell of the Open University.

Full details of the programme, and abstracts of the presentations and posters, are available on the meeting website at:
Media representatives are invited to attend free of charge. However, it would be helpful if media would register in advance their intention to attend by contacting either Peter Bond or Anita Heward (contact details above). Media may also register in the normal way during the meeting by presenting their credentials at the registration desk.

The press room, staffed by Peter Bond and Anita Heward, will be located in Room B5, in the basement of the Physics and Astronomy building. (see for the location). It will be open from 8.45 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. Tuesday - Thursday and 8.45 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. on Friday.

During the week before the meeting we expect to distribute by e-mail 15 – 20 embargoed press notices on topical and newsworthy presentations. They will also be available on password-protected pages of the meeting Web site accessible from:
Media requiring access to embargoed releases should contact Peter Bond or Anita Heward for the user name and password (see contact details above).

THE CONTENT OF EACH PRESS NOTICE IS EMBARGOED UNTIL 00.01 A.M. ON THE DAY OF RELEASE. There will be releases embargoed for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The RAS National Astronomy Meeting (usually held annually) is one of the most important regular gatherings of astronomers in the UK. This year, the principal sponsors of the meeting are the Royal Astronomical Society, the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), the University of Leicester and the National Space Centre, Leicester.
